How To Use Gems In Diablo 4

As players progress through the world of Sanctuary in Diablo 4, they may begin to find that the base stats on their gear just aren’t providing enough power or defense to meet their needs. Fortunately, there is a way to power up your gear without upgrading.

The gem system provides a range of options for adding additional stats to player gear. This guide will cover everything you need to know about how to get gems, how to use them, where to craft them, and how to pull them out of gear containing them.

How to Get Gems in Diablo 4

Gems drop naturally throughout the world of Sanctuary as you cut down enemies. Early on gems will be of a generally low quality providing minimal boosts to different stats. However, it is almost always worth socketing low-quality gems as they are quickly replaced and are returned to the player inventory if a gear piece is scrapped at the blacksmith.

What do Gems do in Diablo 4?

Once you get your hands on a gem you’ll need to find a piece of gear with a socket. Sockets can be added at the jeweler which we’ll talk more about later.

Gear that can roll with one socket

  • Cap
  • Amulet
  • Ring
  • 1-handed-weapon
  • Focus
  • Shield

Gear that can roll with two sockets

  • Tunic
  • Pants
  • 2-handed-weapon

There are 7 Gem types that can drop at 5 rarity levels, with each gem providing a boost to a different stat depending on which of the three gear types (Weapon, Armor, Jewelry) it is socketed in.

The Jeweler

Your one-stop shop for all things Gems and jewelry in Diablo 4 is the Jewler. Found in multiple different towns across Sanctuary the Jeweler can assist you in upgrading gems, adding sockets to gear, pulling sockets out of gear, and upgrading jewelry. At level 20 you will receive a priority quest to upgrade a crude ruby into a chipped ruby. So, how do you do this, and when you have the chipped ruby, where does it go?

Upgrading Gems

One primary use for the Jeweler is upgrading Gems. Higher gem rarities provide massive stat increases as seen above so it is important to understand how to convert lower-tier gems into more favorable higher-tier ones.

The Jeweler can take 3 gems of one kind and rarity, with a little gold, and convert them into a single gem of the next level consuming all three gems. The gold cost for upgrading gems increases as the rarity increases.

How to Socket or Unsocket Gems

Socketing a gem is incredibly simple, all you need to do is click and drag the gem into a gear piece with a socket. You might toss a valuable gem into a piece of gear only to have an upgrade for that gear drop the second you leave town. It happens, and it sucks, but have no fear your gem is not lost.

For a gold cost dependent on the item power of your gear the Jeweler can unsocket gems from gear preserving both the gem and the gear piece. To do this head over to the jeweler and click into the unsocket gem tab. Here you will gain access to a tool that looks similar to a pair of pliers. You can then use this tool by clicking on the gems in your gear, prying them out and spending the gold to do so. Gems are also automatically unsocketed and returned to the player inventory when a piece of gear is salvaged at the blacksmith.

Adding Sockets

Sockets do not always roll on gear immediately when dropped. While gear can occasionally drop with sockets, they can always be added at the jeweler. This costs 1 Scattered Prism, a rare material that can drop from world boss events, treasure goblins, and other assorted chests, with higher difficulty content having a higher chance of awarding them. Note that not all gear types can have sockets added, and some gear types can have two sockets. Reference the list above to see what gear can roll.

Upgrading Jewelry

Much like upgrading gear at the blacksmith the jeweler can upgrade your amulets and rings increasing the values and their rolled stats. Magic and common gear can be upgraded however it is often not worth it. Rare gear can be upgraded 3 times and legendary gear can be upgraded 4 times.

Rare Gear Upgrade Costs

  • Rank 1: 5 Iron Chunks + 4,800 Gold
  • Rank 2: 5 Iron Chunks + 4 Silver Ore + 11,250 Gold
  • Rank 3: 8 Iron Chunks + 6 Silver Ore + 3 Veiled Crystal + 4,800 Gold

Legendary and Unique Gear Upgrade Costs

  • Rank 1: 5 Iron Chunks + 6,750 Gold
  • Rank 2: 5 Iron Chunks + 4 Silver Ore + 13,500 Gold
  • Rank 3: 8 Iron Chunks + 6 Silver Ore + 3 Veiled Crystal + 42,500 Gold
  • Rank 4: 8 Iron Chunks + 7 Silver Ore + 6 Veiled Crystal + 2 Abstruse Sigil + 135,000 Gold

The Gem System and the Jeweler are both incredibly useful in boosting Character power quickly at a low cost. Players seeking to push the highest difficulty content they can at any given stage must absolutely understand how to use gems effectively to enhance their current build.
